Vitamin D in Kenya: Who May Need It and How to Choose
Plenty of sunshine does not always mean plenty of vitamin D. What it does, who may need more and how to choose a supplement.
Kenya gets plenty of sunshine, so it is easy to assume everyone has enough vitamin D. But your skin only makes vitamin D when sunlight reaches it, and many people spend most of the day indoors, travel by car, cover up or use sunscreen. People with darker skin also need more sun exposure to make the same amount.
What vitamin D does
- Contributes to the normal function of the immune system
- Contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth
- Contributes to normal muscle function
- Contributes to normal absorption and use of calcium and phosphorus
- Is needed for normal growth and development of bone in children
Who may want to consider a supplement
People who are mostly indoors, office and night-shift workers, older adults, people who cover most of their skin, and those advised by their doctor after a blood test. A simple blood test is the only way to know your level; ask your doctor or our pharmacist.
D3, or D3 with K2?
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form your skin makes. Some products add vitamin K2, which contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, and minerals such as calcium and magnesium for an all-in-one bone formula.

How much?
Follow the dose on the label. Strengths are shown in IU or micrograms (1,000 IU = 25 µg). Higher strengths are not automatically better; if you already take a multivitamin, check it for vitamin D so you do not double up.
