What Mounjaro is

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a long-acting GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. In the UK it is authorised for adults and children aged 10 and over with type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise, and for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 kg/m² or more, or 27 to under 30 kg/m² with at least one weight-related health condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. Your prescriber decides whether it is right for you.

Strengths and the dose sequence

There are six strengths: 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg and 15 mg per 0.6 ml dose. Treatment starts at 2.5 mg once a week for 4 weeks. The dose is then increased to 5 mg, and after that may be increased in 2.5 mg steps, with at least 4 weeks on each dose. For adults the maintenance doses are 5 mg, 10 mg or 15 mg once a week, and the maximum is 15 mg. Only buy the strength your prescriber has written.

Using the KwikPen

  • Inject once a week, on the same day each week.
  • Inject under the skin of the stomach area or thigh; someone else can inject into the back of your upper arm. Change the injection site each week.
  • Read the Instructions for Use that come with the pen before your first injection.
  • Missed a dose? Take it within 4 days of the missed day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take the next dose on your usual day.
  • You can change your injection day as long as there are at least 3 days between two doses.

Storing Mounjaro

Keep the pen in a fridge at 2 °C to 8 °C and do not freeze it. After first use, it can be kept out of the fridge below 30 °C for up to 30 days, then must be thrown away. Do not use it if the liquid is cloudy, discoloured or has particles.

Side effects and safety

Very common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, reduced appetite and tiredness. Drink plenty of fluids, because losing fluid through vomiting or diarrhoea can affect the kidneys. Get urgent medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain (a possible sign of pancreatitis) or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips or throat or difficulty breathing.

Tell your prescriber if you take insulin or a sulphonylurea (the risk of low blood sugar is higher), have diabetic eye disease, have had pancreatitis, or are having an operation with anaesthesia. Mounjaro must not be used in pregnancy; stop it at least 1 month before a planned pregnancy. It can reduce how well the contraceptive pill works: for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase, a non-oral or barrier method is advised.
